Despite being a lifelong pessimist and sceptic even I am astounded at how quickly has the Labour Party broken promises, and alarmed at their attack on free speech, and even free thought, in this country.
The government, led by a humourless, robotic lawyer and bureaucrat, has empowered the Blob which dominates so much of our public services, made clear that they will do nothing effective to halt illegal immigration, put vital businesses at risk because of their insane Green agenda, and are undermining all the advances made in education by reverting to the progressive ideology, beloved of the teaching unions, which failed children utterly. To ban rote learning, and the teaching of grammar will undermine children's education, but of course will please incompetent teachers, and Marxist idiots.
Most sinister of all they have, after decades of claiming that deterrent sentences do not work when directed at real criminals, decided to treat those daring to question the Left liberal diktats in a manner of which any totalitarian state would be proud. While jailing violent offenders is right, we now see ordinary people similarly treated for daring to express an opinion on social media, so that we now have, in effect, political prisoners in this country.
They are clearly moving towards undermining Brexit, as well as our vital Armed Forces. Britain is no longer a free country, as Labour seeks to criminalise opposition to their plans, and to pass further legislation which will encourage those who take offence at the slightest thing, while ignoring the very real fears of the ordinary people.
At a time when shoplifting has became an epidemic, vandalism wrecks the dedicated work of others, and innocents are stabbed to death in the street, the response of the Labour government is pathetic. Clearly there is no hope for the ordinary, law abiding majority, as the feral thugs and criminals run riot, with little little fear than they will ever be brought to account. This is the state to which we have been reduced by a combination of utter failure by the Conservatives, and ideological insanity on the Left.
Of course the rot goes much further than just the politicians at Westminster. Local councillors are also proving to be a disgrace. When the plans by our local council to extend the hours chargeable for parking were first announced my wife and I signed counter petitions, joined the street demonstration, and posted comments highlighting the obvious detrimental effects on the high street, and the concerts at the castle. However the vast majority of residents did not react, and only now, when the changes have been implemented, am I reading numerous incredulous complaints on the local internet.
This is a prime example of too many just ignoring what is going on, and allowing small minorities to ride roughshod over their lives. As long ago as the 5th century BC the Greek statesman Pericles said "Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you", and this is the problem with democracy, as if too many abstain from taking part, it will not work.
If all those outraged by the decision take note, and resolve to vote out those responsible at the next council elections, perhaps we may be able to reverse these decisions. However I am not holding my breath.
In response to letters from myself, and like minded citizens, some in our local paper have questioned where the hospitals would be without the mass immigration which so many of us oppose. Clearly they must view the world through rose tinted spectacles if they believes that the illegals arriving by boat, and the dependents of those accompanying students, are all qualified medical professionals, rushing off to help the NHS.
In reality the vast majority are either totally unskilled, or are depriving indigenous workers of jobs, by their willingness to accept lower pay and conditions, while a very large number end up merely as a burden on our welfare system, to which they have contributed precisely nothing. Of course
properly qualified medical staff may be admitted where there is a problem with recruitment, but this should be controlled, and is anyway not the answer to the failures of the health service.
For many years the vast sums provided to health trusts has been completely wasted on an army of bureaucrats, the bulk of whom contribute nothing to the actual task of helping the sick, but, through the activities of that parasitic non profession, HR, produce endless regulations, which just obstruct the genuine efforts of doctors and nurses, swamp everything with red tape, and waste immense amounts of time on mandatory box ticking exercises.
In addition the absurd insistence that all nurses must have university degrees is not only an insult to all those who in the past worked for what they regarded as a vocation, and did not require spending years at university, but is also preventing those youngsters who not wish to build up enormous debts, but feel a calling, from being able to serve.
The only solution to the collapsing health service is a root and branch reform, which would direct the vast sums available to front line work, not back room pen pushers. However, with a government which believes the opposite, matters will only get worse.
The despicable actions by the government in the field of foreign policy are now undermining this country. Starmer kindly says that he is 'not reversing Brexit', which is very good of him when one considers that it was a decision taken by the British people, and that there was no manifesto commitment by his party to do so. We all know that they will nevertheless do all they can to allow the bureaucrats of Brussels to interfere once again in our affairs. He and Lammy went cap in hand, metaphorically on their knees, to the EU, at a time when Germany is in a worse economic mess than Britain, attempting to cosy up to them.
Our greatest ally is the USA, and now Donald Trump is once again be in charge. It was insane for Labour spokespeople to attack him, rather than keep quiet, but of course they are too thick to recognize that the consequences for our country could be very worrying if he is caused to view us as an enemy.
The education system, the police, the civil service and much of the media, are already in danger of being dominated by the morons of woke. Our political class is guilty of betraying the people in a manner which our forefathers would have regarded as beyond belief. Is this the future for which our patents and grandparents fought two world wars?
