At one time Parliament was omnipotent, meaning it was sovereign and it was the place where all laws for the whole of the UK were made. There was an order to things, Parliament made the laws, the police and various authorities upheld the laws, apprehending those that broke the law and the Judiciary and our courts then tried those accused of breaking the law. The courts, often with a jury, would decide the innocence or guilt of the accused and if found guilty of breaking the laws made in Parliament, depending on the severity of the crime, those convicted would face different levels of punishment either by varying length prison sentences or fines.
Under this system everyone knew where they stood, it made sense. The people voted for their MPs and by doing so would be voting for a Government which was answerable to Parliament and via the democratic vote both Government and Parliament were held to account by the people. This worked well and all our institutions in all parts of our legal system were respected - then in 1973 we joined the Common Market and from then on this system of respected and ordered law began to break down.
At that time the people thought they still had the ultimate say at election time, they were led to believe by Prime Minister Ted Heath that joining the European Community was nothing more than a trade agreement, he said there would be "No loss of essential sovereignty", he later admitted he lied as he knew that by signing up to the Treaty of Rome he had made Britain and all its laws subservient to all European laws which, via that treasonous treaty, allowed all European laws to override all UK laws. From then on Parliament was no longer omnipotent.I t took years for the people to awake to the immense damage done, in my case it was around 1991 when reality struck leaving me realising we no longer lived in a sovereign democracy.
By the time of the 2016 referendum enough people were aware of the serious loss of sovereignty and had the common sense to vote 'Leave', sadly, they were still being abused by a pro-EU anti democratic elite who were doing everything to block and stop Brexit, which by doing so highlighted just how much Parliament had been undermined by other means over the years. For over sixty years Parliamentary sovereignty has been slowly chipped away, in 1946 Britain signed up for the World Health Organisation (W.H.O.), which was later formally established on April 7, 1948, when the constitution had been ratified by enough member nations. Many of these things, like the road to Hell, were done with good intensions and those in power who ratified them, I presume, were not aware of what it could become when being run by the wrong people more interested in a power grab than doing good, which in many ways typifies the W.H.O of today. Many people have serious concerns about it having the power to order nations to lockdown should there be another global pandemic, thus undermining parliaments and national sovereignty, including us here in the UK.
The European Court of Human Rights (E.C.H.R.) is another prime example of how Parliament is undermined by a foreign based court. Due to being members of the European Union, which was eager to sign up to this court which is not part of the EU, we to had no say in the matter as then EU members, we had no other option but to meekly comply with the instructions given by our then EU masters. Sadly, since leaving the EU we are still members of the E.C.H.R. despite various Governments being made to look weak and impotent when the E.C.H.R. overrules our Parliament and courts, especially in regard to the hoards committing the criminal act of crossing the English Channel without consent or any form of identity. That foreign based court has given these criminals all sorts of protection even when they have committed vile crimes since illegally arriving.
The Courts themselves, thanks to the meddling by the Blair Government with the introduction of the Supreme Court, have been seen to overrule and challenge the Government which in turn destroys the ordered system of law making. We saw this when the democratic vote, made by the people, was being challenged by the 'remainer' clique who used this court to block and sabotage the Brexit vote. Sadly, with members of this court being biased in favour of the EU it backed and supported the EU remainers rather than the democratic vote made by the majority of the electorate. Prior to Blair's constitutional wrecking spree it was the Law Lords in our sovereign Parliament who were and still technically are, the highest legal authority in the land but as we have seen the Supreme Court challenges that power when supporting the remainer minority
Add in how the large number of unaccountable quango's can undermine Parliament and the powers given to the Blair created devolved Scottish Parliament and Welsh assembly, all this has a negative effect and is chipping away even more Parliamentary sovereignty. Now our new, unelected, Prime Minister, the scruffy looking Andy Burnham, is speeding up the process of making Parliament obsolete with his plans for more devolution to move power away from the Palace of Westminster to elected mayors creating more tiers of governance, bureaucracy and expense with the vast cost of lavish offices and staff for these unnecessary bigwigs. There was a time before the Blair meddling when councils and unpaid local councillors did everything for far less cost than these pointless Metro Mayors.
Sadly, when comparing the members of previous Parliaments before the start of its destruction in 1973 to those who sit on the house of Commons green benches today, also those on the red benches in what I call the House of Cronies (courtesy of the Blair destruction period), the quality of those in the past compared to Parliaments incumbents of today is sadly vastly different and a deterioration. I n the past we had people of intelligence and intellect, we may not have always agreed with their past aims, but we respected them - today we have Angela Rayner which just about says it all.
There is always talk of rebuilding Britain, but this cannot be done until we have rebuilt Parliament and restored its omnipotence.
