Two weeks ago I wrote an article about the show trial of Boris Johnson. It attracted attention and comment on twitter. I have never looked at comments on the Bruges Twitter feed and it was a revelation.
The level of spite and childish name calling was staggering. Since the removal of Boris the antics of EU acolytes and their rejoiner friends has been maintained at a feverish level. Indeed, the Seven Year Tantrum puts the Seven Year Itch to shame by the level of sheer emotional fury exhibited.
For more years than I care to remember I have been asking supporters of the EU the same question. "Why do you want to give up our sovereign rights and democracy to be ruled by an unelected president and 27 person commission who are democratically uncountable?" Years ago the question was dismissed. Heath said we were not giving up anything. Of course he lied and we now have cabinet records to prove it. That has not stopped the EU fifth column attacking and successfully destroying politicians that have dared to admit that EU membership does, indeed, destroy our democratic rights. Margaret Thatcher finally woke up to EU reality, spoke against it and was stabbed in the back. Boris the vote winning two term Mayor of London and 80 seat majority Tory party darling, stabbed in the back for trying to deliver Brexit.
Back to my question. Why? I can report that I have never, ever had an answer. Lots of bluster and posturing. Lots of faux economic arguments (think project fear) that would have made even Esau cringe with embarrassment, but the actual question. Nothing. Well in fairness Tim Farron erstwhile leader of the LibDems had a stab. According to Tim, "countries choose to pool sovereignty via UN, NATO, EU etc., the only way it would be true that being in the EU was undemocratic would be if we couldn't leave. But we did. Which proves that we didn't need to". I have never met Tim and know nothing about him except he's an MP. I wonder why he did not notice that the EU had the right to impose law and regulation without him having to review it? Did he not notice that the EU had supremacy over our law? Does he know that the UN and NATO don't have those rights? Was Tim asleep at the wheel together with the majority of those we elected to guard our democracy?
Since Boris's removal the attacks on this country by the Guardian, Independent, BBC and other pro EU propaganda sources have been relentless. According to poll after poll the majority now regret Brexit. They believe we'd be better off if we'd stayed in the EU. Quite what that opinion is based on (if it's real) is a puzzle. A recent trip to core EU revealed most prices higher than ours, labour shortages and in parts, depopulation due to high unemployment. I have only once been asked to take part in a political survey. I got to question two of the prescreen to be told I was not suitable. "Why not?" I asked. "We've plenty of your type". It's the way BBC question time is always heavily waited in favour of left -wing EU supporters. I do not know anyone who regrets their vote. I do know some (including an Austrian friend), who having witnessed the vindictiveness of the EU wished they'd voted leave.
This still leaves the question unanswered. Of course there is no answer except personal ambition. The lure of a tax free job in Brussels is even more mouthwatering than a government red box. We, the vulgar masses have robbed the aspiring acolytes not only of their rainbow, but the crock of gold they expected at the end of it too.
We are saddled with a lacklustre Treasury controlled government that seems determined to wreck our country and prepare it, like a Christmas Turkey, trussed and ready for the EU oven. The fault lies entirely with Tory MPs. Apart from a minority of democrats they have acquiesced in the destruction of the party and alienation of conservatives in the country. Steve Baker has happily sold his democratic beliefs and Northern Ireland for a little red box. There are sadly, many like him.
We are in a race. Will the Tory party destroy the country before it destroys itself? I'm not enamoured of the alternatives like Reform, but politically homeless where do I go? Do I once more vote Tory just because I know that Labour will be a total disaster? The present Tory party is centre left. It's more LibDem than Nick Clegg. How much nose holding can we do? As most of Europe turns right, we are saddled with Mr Wishy Washy Sunak and his band of faux tories. Maybe the only hope in the short time left is a revolt by constituencies. Most are real conservatives, supporters of national sovereignty. They have allowed Conservative Central Office to obtain dictatorial powers and create a mess in their own metro image.
Time is short. It's time to act.
